We are one of Australia’s largest and most active debating societies. The UNSW Debating Society runs a range of internal debating events during session, incorporating the traditional three-on-three style debates and British Parliamentary debating. In 2007, we introduced the Bowes-Cummings Medal, a best speaker prize awarded to the best debater in the first session. In 2008, we introduced the Kensington Championship, a team competition running throughout the first session. During the year we will stage numerous special debates on campus, as well as a plethora of exciting social events, so check out this site regularly, or simply check our notice board outside the library, to find out what’s happening and when. Our special debates include our renowned public comedy debates, inter-faculty comedy debating, and our recently-introduced house debates. We are also one of Australia's most competitive and successful debating societies. Every year we send several teams to the Easters, Australs and Worlds competitions. UNSW had one of the highest number of points of any University in the 2004 Worlds tournament and based on the Worlds team results from the past 5 years we are in the top 10 debating Universities globally. Amongst our other achievements we were champions at the Australian Intervarsity Debating Championships for three years in a row between 1999 and 2001, and champions of the Australian British Parliamentary Debating Championships twice in a row 2004 and 2005. As one of Australia's most active debating societies we hosted the very successful Easters, the Australian Intervarsity Championship in 2004, and hosted Universities from all around Australia. Last year we hosted the Australian Women's Debating Championships, an event that brought the best female debaters in the region to UNSW. The society, however, is not just about debating. Not only is UNSW competitive in the debating arena, but we are also renowned, and at times notorious, for our party prowess. Stay tuned to this site to find out what events we have planned. If you are interested in joining the society, come along to Internals on Monday nights of semester, in M11 of the Chemical Sciences Building. We cater for all standards and have members from all faculties (except ADFA).
