On 1 July, a second schools tournament was for years 5 through to 8. This followed on from our successful intermediate/senior tournament held in February. In the primary division, Abbotsleigh School for Girls topped the table, and in the junior division, Sydney Boys High School retained the title they have never lost in the three years we have run tournaments. At UNSW DebSoc, we have not had a long tradition of holding schools tournaments, but we are always seeking to build up a worthwhile programme. Throughout the last two years, we have been planning for the future, and are looking to expand our role in schools debating. Our previous tournaments have attracted top debating schools and have been very competitive. Participating schools are a mix of both comprehensive and selective public schools, as well as independent schools. Despite the competitive nature of our competition, we are keen to emphasise the training and development elements involved in our schools tournament. We want all participants to leave the tournament having learnt something new about debating. |
