Bowes-Cummings Medal Night
Thursday, 22 May 2008
The Bowes-Cummings Medal Night is UNSW DebSoc's version of the Brownlow Medal night, with the award of the Bowes-Cummings Medal and the Kensington Cup debate, as well as the annual Matt Kwan Oratory Competition.

Monday 26 May was Bowes-Cummings Night, DebSoc's night of nights.  Dave Maher became the second Bowes-Cummings Medallist and the Best Novice, sweeping both speaker prizes in only his first year of university.  In an unexpected kerfuffle, past winner Andrew Sudol had to be forcibly restrained to retrieve the coveted prize. "Waah I'm not Bowes-Cummings Medalist anymore" said Dave in a humourous impression of Andrew.

Li Zhou became the Oratory Champion after a whip-cracking speech supporting Hillary Clinton's bid to be President.  This was followed by the Kensington Cup debate, on the topic 'That we should have corporal punishment in schools'.  Team Anastasia, represented by Ben Williams, Zulpha Styer, and Dave Maher (in the absence of Angela Kintominas), were victorious over crowd favourites The Entertainers - Justin Rassi, Kristyn Glanville and Tom Bowes.

After a night of many words, DebSoc retired to the 'grand hall' of Chao Praya restaurant in The Spot to celebrate a great first session of debating.

Bowes-Cummings Medallist and Best Novice: Dave Maher

Matt Kwan Oratory Competition Champion: Li Zhou

Kensington Cup Champions - Team Anastasia: Ben Williams, Zulpha Styer, Angela Kintominas (with Dave Maher in the final)

Kensington Cup runners-up - The Entertainers:  Tom Bowes, Justin Rassi, Kristyn Glanville
